El Alambique is an old mill from the 18th century with thick stone walls. It was first a distillery for brandy, then an oil mill for olive oil. The mill is located together with three other houses on a steep hillside plot of one hectare in Algatocín. Algatocín is located in a part of Andalusia that has a relatively large amount of water. There are forests with cork oaks, oaks and pines, beautiful rivers and hiking trails. There are many fruit trees on the property and a vegetable patch. The mill and two other flats are rented out so that the income can be used to finance part of the costs of renovation and maintenance. There are many things to do. The property was very neglected when we took it over in 2023. Last year, we replaced all the electrics and waterproofed most of the roofs. There is more renovation work to come. The garden also needs care. Some trees have dried out in recent years. We want to use the water from our own spring to set up an irrigation system that will supply the entire property with water and turn it into a living oasis. There is already ripe fruit almost every season. We want to reforest the areas where the trees have dried out. My name is Corona. I’m from Germany and I keep going back there to earn the money for the renovation. My daughter (22) spends a lot of time in Alambique, taking care of the garden and painting. Our neighbour Zulma is responsible for preparing the flats for letting. Our friend Kalo renovates the houses. I offer retreats and work camps. Family, friends and acquaintances often come to visit to enjoy nature and the pool and to help us with our work. We are looking for nature-loving people who would like to look after the garden. The property has its own spring, which feeds the irrigation system for the garden. It is often gnawed at by mice, so that a lot of water leaks out at this point and there is not enough water available in other places. One of the tasks is to create an irrigation system that mice cannot sabotage and that supplies all the trees with water. Other tasks may include improving the paths and repairing natural stone walls. We also want to plant more trees. In particular, we would like to reforest the lower part of the site, which is very steep. Sometimes we will work together, sometimes individually. There is an opportunity to help Kalo with the renovation. Kalo is an excellent craftsman. He has worked in various fields and can do almost anything. He has creative, aesthetic ideas, works carefully and to a high standard. You can learn a lot from him.
