Finding helpers: how to make the right match
Who helps here
Behind every request is a person who wants to trade time and hands for accommodation – not staff, not an agency. Typical are travellers on the road with a camper or backpack who want to stay somewhere for a few weeks, students and school leavers during the holidays, professionals on sabbatical, retired tradespeople and gardeners with decades of experience, plus couples and families looking for a different kind of holiday.
Each request states what the person can do, when they have time and where they would like to go. Many helpers also mention whether they come with a dog, a child or their own vehicle.
How to find the right helper
Filter: Pick the category you need help with – say gardening, animal care or renovation – and the country you live in. Helpers state where they want to travel.
Read the profile: Skills, time frame, reviews from previous hosts and the membership date tell you whether it might fit.
Ask specifically: Describe what needs doing at your place, how many hours a day, what accommodation and meals you offer and for which period. The clearer the request, the faster the reply.
Put it in writing: Agree on tasks, hours, days off and duration in messages before arrival – it saves both sides misunderstandings.
List your own offer instead of searching
The fastest route to helpers is usually your own offer: on holiday4help, offers receive far more enquiries than requests, because helpers search specifically by place, task and accommodation. A listing takes ten minutes, costs nothing and stays online for as long as you need help. Doing both – browsing requests and listing an offer – brings the most enquiries.
The legal side, in brief
Work exchange is a voluntary arrangement between private individuals: accommodation and meals in return for help, without wages and without an employment contract. What matters is that it stays that way – a few hours a day, no fixed shifts, no tasks that would otherwise be done by paid staff. Does it cost anything to contact helpers?
No. Browsing requests, creating an account and messaging helpers is free – and so is your own offer. holiday4help charges neither a membership fee nor a placement fee.
Do I have to pay helpers?
No. The return is accommodation and usually meals. No money changes hands in either direction – that is what distinguishes work exchange from seasonal work or paid jobs.
How many hours of help can I expect?
Typically 2 to 5 hours a day, usually five days a week. Depending on accommodation and meals the amount settles somewhere in that range – agree on it clearly before arrival.
How do I recognise a reliable helper?
By reviews from previous hosts, a complete request with skills and time frame, the membership date, and how specifically someone replies to your enquiry. A short phone call before confirming settles the rest.
What if it doesn't work out on site?
