Old farmhouse with garden in the beautiful Elbtalaue

From the end of June to the end of September 2026 we're looking for people to help us continue renovating the old Deichvogtei, a listed heritage farmstead. The Deichvogtei consists of an old main house and an almost completed barn. It sits right on the dyke of the Elbe, next to the Elbe cycle path, opposite the Wendland. A swimming lake is a 5-minute walk away. The large garden, with hammocks, fruit trees and a big fire pit, offers the chance to relax in nature. The old main house is at your disposal with a large kitchen, a bathroom and several bedrooms. We offer accommodation and part of the meals in exchange for 4 hours of work per day. Here's a short overview of the planned work: From 20 June until mid-August we want to build a new tiled stove, work with straw-clay, do electrical installations, install wall heating and lay a brick floor. From 20 July we'll start paving part of the courtyard with natural stone, with about 2 weeks of professional guidance for this. We can especially use help with this project. In September the floor will be laid in the new kitchen-living room and oak doors and windows will be installed. There's also always something to do in the garden. The work is supervised by an architect and recognised expert in traditional building and heritage conservation. So you can learn a great deal in practice about traditional craft techniques and ecological building. We'd be delighted if you helped preserve the old monument and enjoyed the beautiful nature of the Elbtalaue.
