Hello! We’re a down-to-earth couple (age 59) who live with our 2 horses, 4 goats, 2 cats, and 2 dogs on a small 2-hectare quinta about 65 km east of Lisbon in the Ribatejo region. Unfortunately, we’re not quite as physically fit as we’d like to be, so we’re happy to offer a place to stay in exchange for help year-round (except in July and August, due to the intense heat). We live in a very quiet and secluded spot on a dead-end road, almost in the middle of nowhere, with no access to public transportation. Of course, we’d be happy to pick you up from an airport, train station, or bus station. You enjoy being around large horses and large dogs, or at least don’t mind them. Jay, our Lipizzaner mix mare, and Celeb, our Lusitano gelding, love every pat and treat and are also happy to give interested visitors a brief introduction to the basics of horse care. Our Raffeiro Alentejano herding dog, Laika, takes her guarding duties very seriously, but after a short period of getting to know you, she’s a real cuddle bug. Things to experience: Lisbon is about 65 km away and, as a European metropolis and the capital of Portugal, offers a wide variety of places to visit. Various river cruises on the Tagus are easily accessible. The Ribatejo region is the cultural heart of Portuguese cattle and horse breeding; high-quality riding lessons are available for riders of all levels, including lessons with one of the country’s best bullfighters, who runs his riding school in the neighboring village. Wine lovers will find what they’re looking for in the private adegas of the surrounding villages. Good food—from rustic village taverns to high-end restaurants—is easily accessible by car. Those who simply want to enjoy the peace and quiet can do so on our property or while hiking in the surrounding area. The Way of St. James to Santiago passes right by our house. 5/ 5We were incredibly happy that we could move to the Quinta in mid-January and got to know the Portuguese country life with a touch of German East Westphalian culture. ;) What started out as two weeks ended up being four. We got along well with Holger and Sonja right away, so we spent many hours together. Not only at the Quinta, but also at the local markets, in Portuguese restaurants, at the flea market or at a coffee date with their friends. The accommodation was incredibly comfortable and you always have a place to be for yourself. Sonja and Holger make sure that you feel really good immediately and take great care of you. They have a big pleasure in explaining and teaching you new things (about horses and horsemanship or craftsmanship..) and the work is never too much or too hard. If you have a car, it's perfect for exploring Lisbon and the surrounding area on your own, too. We are very happy to have met them and their great dogs and horses. We already miss them all! We are really looking forward coming back again!
