A small, idyllic horse farm in 54614 Niederlauch, Eifel

Hello everyone, There’s an old farmhouse on my property that’s being renovated and, in some cases, restored or expanded. There are all kinds of tasks that need to be done: • Every day there are small, simple “odd jobs” to do, such as mucking out the horse stalls, watering the garden, carrying things from point A to point B, mowing the lawn, harvesting and processing fruit, weeding, or similar tasks (depending on the season). • General labor for the house renovation, or—if you’re an experienced tradesperson—independent carpentry or handyman work • In the stable, challenges often arise that call for creative, hands-on solutions—whether something is broken or a last-minute change in how the horses are cared for is needed (e.g., due to a horse’s illness). • For all tasks, there will be someone on site who knows what they’re doing and will tell you what to do and how to do it. We would expect you to help out as a general laborer. However, if you’re a skilled tradesperson and can work independently, all the better. Then you’ll have to work fewer hours per day (see below). Our village is a small, sleepy Eifel village surrounded by breathtaking nature. You won’t find any action here, but you’ll find peace and quiet, plenty of fresh air, and a wonderful panoramic view of the Eifel landscape from the lawn in my yard. There are three sweet horses who’d love for you to pet them. In the neighboring Vulkaneifel region, there are the maars—perfect for cooling off in crystal-clear volcanic lake water and enjoying a relaxing day. The “Hohes Venn” Nature Park, with its vast moorland, is also not far away. The Eifelsteig offers beautiful, idyllic, and varied hiking stages between Trier and Aachen, which is also nearby. In the neighboring village of Schönecken, for example, you can book llama hikes. A separate bedroom with two beds is available for you on our farm. There’s also a fully equipped construction-site kitchen with everything you need for cooking and baking. We share the kitchen. The kitchen floor isn’t finished yet (it currently has ugly floorboards that need to be sanded down), and the walls still look like a construction site. But we find it very cozy, and it can be heated. There’s now a nice new bathroom on the property with all the amenities, which we share. We’d be happy to send more pictures upon request.  If you’d like to spend some quality time in the Eifel, just let me know when you’d like to come, what kind of work you can do, and how much you’d like to work (0176-97831220, i.hannegref@web.de). • If you’re not very skilled with your hands and would prefer to take on simpler tasks, free lodging is available for 1.5 hours of work per day. • If you’re a handyman or skilled at manual labor and can work independently, free lodging is available for 1 hour of work per day, and for 2 hours of work per day, you’ll receive lodging and meals. If you want to work more, there’s an additional reward starting from the 3rd hour :-)). In winter, you’ll need to work an extra hour to get a heated bedroom. • If you’d like to go on a guided walking trail ride on our beginner-friendly horses, the horses would love to have you. The rule here is: you should work an additional amount of time roughly equal to the duration of the ride. Regarding the construction site: Sometimes materials are missing, decisions about how to proceed on the site haven’t been made yet, or we’re currently taking a break from construction. In those cases, the available work isn’t enough to earn your meals. Just ask shortly beforehand :-)) About working: We don’t keep track of time with a stopwatch. So far, it’s always worked out so that no one has felt like they had to work too much, nor have we felt like someone was working too little. Everyone works as much or as little as they feel is appropriate. About meals: We’ll cook for tradespeople who work independently for at least 2 hours—if they’d like us to. For volunteers doing more general labor, we’ll eat together if you’d like, and everyone chips in a little toward the meal. The nearest supermarket is 6 km away, and we’d be happy to drive you there if you’re arriving without a car. Accommodations: You’re also welcome to camp on our property.
