Every offer comes from a host who provides accommodation in exchange for help – no hotel, no agency in between. The range is wide: farms and gardens looking for help with harvest, animals and beds, house sitting in homes whose owners travel, renovation projects from half-timbered houses to fincas, families who need support with everyday life, plus guesthouses, campsites, sailing boats and eco projects.

Accommodation ranges from a private room or holiday flat to a pitch for your camper or tent. Most offers include meals – whether and how much is always stated in the listing.

1. Filter: Narrow the offers down by country, category or type of accommodation, or search for a place directly.

2. Read: Tasks, time frame, hours per day, accommodation and meals are in the listing – along with reviews and the host's reply rate.

3. Write: With a free account you send the host a message. Say briefly who you are, what you can do and when you have time.

4. Agree: The norm is 2 to 5 hours of help a day for free accommodation and usually meals. No money changes hands in either direction. Settle duration, tasks and days off before you travel – ideally in writing via messages.

Tasks and hours: Does it say concretely what needs doing and for how long? Vague descriptions are a reason to ask.

Time frame: Does the period on offer fit your plans? Many farms need help mainly in spring and at harvest time; house sitting offers often have exact dates.

Accommodation: Private room, guest house, caravan or pitch – and is there a kitchen, bathroom and Wi-Fi?

Reviews and activity: Reviews from previous helpers, the membership date and the reply rate show how reliable a host is. For offers without reviews, a short phone call before committing helps.
