Work exchange: how to find the right offer
What you'll find here
Every offer comes from a host who provides accommodation in exchange for help – no hotel, no agency in between. The range is wide: farms and gardens looking for help with harvest, animals and beds, house sitting in homes whose owners travel, renovation projects from half-timbered houses to fincas, families who need support with everyday life, plus guesthouses, campsites, sailing boats and eco projects.
Accommodation ranges from a private room or holiday flat to a pitch for your camper or tent. Most offers include meals – whether and how much is always stated in the listing.
How a request works
1. Filter: Narrow the offers down by country, category or type of accommodation, or search for a place directly.
2. Read: Tasks, time frame, hours per day, accommodation and meals are in the listing – along with reviews and the host's reply rate.
3. Write: With a free account you send the host a message. Say briefly who you are, what you can do and when you have time.
4. Agree: The norm is 2 to 5 hours of help a day for free accommodation and usually meals. No money changes hands in either direction. Settle duration, tasks and days off before you travel – ideally in writing via messages.
What to look for when reading an offer
Tasks and hours: Does it say concretely what needs doing and for how long? Vague descriptions are a reason to ask.
Time frame: Does the period on offer fit your plans? Many farms need help mainly in spring and at harvest time; house sitting offers often have exact dates.
Accommodation: Private room, guest house, caravan or pitch – and is there a kitchen, bathroom and Wi-Fi?
Reviews and activity: Reviews from previous helpers, the membership date and the reply rate show how reliable a host is. For offers without reviews, a short phone call before committing helps.
What it costs: nothing
holiday4help is a free platform – no membership fee, no placement fee, no subscription. You only pay for your journey, your insurance and whatever you choose to spend along the way. Hosts pay nothing either. Unlike many work exchange or house sitting platforms that charge an annual fee, here you can see every offer and every contact option without a paywall.

What does it cost to use holiday4help?
Nothing. Browsing offers, creating an account and messaging hosts is completely free – there is no membership fee and no placement fee. The platform is funded by advertising. Anyone who supports us voluntarily via Patreon helps us keep improving the service and uses the site ad-free.
How many hours do I have to help?
Typically 2 to 5 hours a day, usually five days a week. Each host sets the exact amount in the listing – and you agree on it before you travel.
Are meals always included?
Usually, but not always. Some hosts offer full board, others provide a kitchen for self-catering. The 'Board' entry appears in every listing under 'At a glance'.
Do I need experience?
Not for most offers. Reliability and a willingness to pitch in matter more. If a host requires specific skills – such as trade experience or handling horses – the listing says so explicitly.
Can I come with a dog, a child or a campervan?
Often yes. Use the filters 'Features' (for example pets allowed, suitable for families) and 'Accommodation' (camper pitch) – and when in doubt, ask the host directly.
How quickly do hosts reply?
It varies. Every listing page shows the host's reply rate and when they were last active. Feel free to contact several hosts at once, and let them know honestly if you decide otherwise.
